How to deal with MSFT [INDIA]

Jun 24, 2021 118 Comments

Interviewed for MSFT on 1st of june and received an offer last week for L62 position although I interviewed for L63. I tried to walk away from the offer. They still won’t budge. I haven’t heard back from them in last 4 days. I want to join them for the name but can’t join at L62. My yoe is 10.

Any MSFT people can you please help. Do you think it’s logical for someone to join at L62 for 10 yoe? Is it common?

Are these levels decided by HR based on current compensation of people or by the team based on interview performance?

  • I know someone who had 8 YOE who got L61 and she joined so it is expected to get a L62 in 10 YOE going by that. Also if you prove to be really good at your work you can get promoted from L62 to 63 in just 1.5 years. A guy got it who is technically very amazing so much so that he got into MSFT WITHOUT A REFERRAL by just applying to the careers portal. He is that good! And he still got L62. He is in an org where even a simple junior level promotion takes the longest time as compared to every other org. Still he got L63 in 1.5 years so yes it is pretty common to get L62 for 10 yoe

  • Most of the companies try to downlevel you and offer low numbers. Depends on your interview performance and competing offers too.

    Its not unheard of. I know 10+ yoe folks landed as L62s. Even a 9yoe L61.

    Going from there to L63 is not all smooth as well. Be prepared to be stuck at that level for 2 years min unless you shine from day1.

  • "I am not joining them at L62 with 10yoe"

    Not the right reason, OP. Focus on negotiating the stocks a bit. Join and use your experience as leverage to ask for quick L63 promotion. It's opportunity cost v/s L62/63, Microsoft still is a HUGE brand in India. Join and then maybe you can look for L5 at google. Don't put your ego in the decision-making. If you are getting more money, better opportunity (there are options to switch to US/Canada at L62), more weight on the resume go for it.

    If you let this go hoping, you will get another job, you can do the same being at Microsoft too. Join and quit in 2 months, a bit inconvenient but you'll be left with no regrets about passing on an offer. Also, with 10YOE, I guess you will be having a family, at Microsoft, you can manage work-life balance, maybe not so well at some potential new place.

    Be smart OP.

    Current_Offer = Mentor++;
    While (next offer != True)
    {
    Offer = Microsoft;
    WLB++;
    Compensation++;
    Immegration_Possible = True;
    }

    Next_Offer = Microsoft++

    Walking away means walking away for real. Not just bluffing. I wouldn't join at L62 with 10 yoe. Plenty of tech companies are hiring like crazy. Try your luck elsewhere.
